News: Two GMDA Junior Engineers to Face Prosecution Over Drowning-07-05-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has sanctioned the prosecution of engineering officials over the death of a 26-year-old man who drowned in an under-construction stormwater drain on the Galleria Market road last year, officials aware of the matter said.
A senior GMDA official said permission covers two junior engineers for alleged negligence on duty. The services of a subdivisional engineer, who was on contract, have already been discontinued. Gurugram Police, which is investigating, had sought the sanction.
GMDA engineers are deemed public servants under the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority Act, 2017, and Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) requires prior sanction before courts can take cognisance of offences allegedly committed on official duty.
Naresh, 26, drowned on July 9 last year in the drain on the road dividing Sector 27 and Sector 28. His body was recovered on July 13 and a case was registered at DLF Police Station. Police found no barricades or warning signs. GMDA has recommended action against the contractor.
On April 18, a car driven by a female professor overturned into a pit on the same road; she was rescued. GMDA CEO PC Meena then issued a protocol making executive engineers responsible for certifying site safety.
