News: Smart Street Lights Proposed for 10 Gurugram Roads-30-04-2026
Smart street lighting modelled on Connaught Place is planned for at least 10 major roads by the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), officials said. The proposal, described as a first of its kind in Haryana, has gone to the Urban Local Bodies Department Haryana for approval.
It envisages multi-functional poles with public announcement systems, emergency alerts and, in select areas, integrated cameras. Locations were chosen through a ground survey that prioritised poor visibility, safety concerns and inadequate lighting.
Vijay Dhaka, chief engineer, MCG, said the lights will be linked to a centralised control and monitoring system (CCMS) for real-time tracking, so faults are identified quickly. CCTV cameras are also being installed at key locations, he said.
Gurugram has around 120,000 street lights, but officials acknowledged gaps from malfunctioning systems and poorly lit areas. Earlier modernisation attempts were delayed by payment disputes and technical issues. A 2017 public-private partnership project installed only 798 control panels against a planned 1,405.
Residents welcomed the plan but raised concerns over execution, citing poorly lit streets in developing and peripheral sectors.
