News: Gurugram Drain Desilting: MCG Says 408 km Done, RWAs Differ-28-04-2026
Residents in several Gurugram sectors say drain desilting never began or stalled, though the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) said on Thursday that 408 km of its 607 km drainage network is clean, with the monsoon a few months away.
Puneet Pahwa, general secretary of sector 45, said the sector’s nearly 20 kilometres of drains have seen no work. Balbir Singh of Sector 46 said nothing has been done for the last four years, accusing MCG of chasing photo opportunities while accountability vanishes when severe waterlogging hits. Kundan Lal Sharma, general secretary of Sector 21 RWA, said nearly 75% was finished before work halted, with no sign of a restart. BS Yadav, RWA president of sector 31, said last year’s unfinished work meant even light rain caused waterlogging.
Additional commissioner Yash Jaluka said the aim is nearly 473 km by May 31, with the rest cleared before the rains. Gurugram frequently suffers severe waterlogging, and earlier this month Urban Local Bodies (ULB) commissioner and secretary Ashok Kumar Meena directed urgent, coordinated steps to prevent flooding.
Officials said tenders are out for pending works in Ward 10, South City II, Nirvana Country, Rosewood City (Ward 15), Hero Honda Chowk to Anaj Mandi (Ward 28), and Suncity (Ward 21). Chief engineer Vijay Dhaka said some stretches need no desilting and the rest will be cleaned soon.
