News: Gurugram Dust-Free Road Goal Slips as Sweepers Fall Short-28-04-2026
A plan dated December 30, 2025 committed the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) to clearing dust from 143.1 kilometres of road in one quarter: 49 km in January, 46.1 km in February and 48 km in March. Residents and environmentalists say most roads are still dusty, whatever MCG says about sweeping and dust control. An HT spot check last week saw visible dust on stretches due to be clean by April 2026, among them Bakhtawar Chowk, Umang Chowk, the Hero Honda Chowk stretch, Southern Peripheral Road, Kataria Chowk, Artemis Road, Wazirabad Road, Ambedkar Chowk, the Dhanwapur underpass, Golf Course Road, Vatika Chowk to Aria Mall and Basai Chowk.
MCG data show at least 550 sweepers across four zones from January to March removed around 4,400 kg of dust. Officials cited scarce resources and many development works: 18 mechanical sweeping machines where 42 are needed, and 4,910 personnel against 5,426. More equipment should arrive this year, and the plan concedes full results with current resources could take up to three months. Additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav said it is "not a one-day job", needing regular monitoring and sweeping, and that a difference will eventually show.
Environmentalist Ruchika Sethi called for tougher enforcement and coordination among departments, blaming open carriage of sand in low-body tractors and trucks, which becomes airborne and is kicked up again by traffic. Naveen Bhardwaj of Sector 37 cited uncovered trucks and potholes. From November to February MCG issued at least 37 challans to vehicles hauling uncovered construction material, with penalties near Rs 1.85 lakh.
Gauri Sarin, founder of Making Model Gurugram, said picking some stretches each month while ignoring the rest undermines the goal, and asked MCG to report on its last 3 months, beginning with its own plan.
