News: Haryana Aims for No Untreated Water in Yamuna by 2027-24-04-2026
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday said the government aims to ensure that not a single drop of untreated water enters the Yamuna by the end of 2027. Reviewing departmental work in Chandigarh, he asked departments to coordinate and to set up new effluent, sewage and common effluent treatment plants wherever needed.
According to an official statement, 91 STPs with a combined capacity of 1,543 MLD now operate in the Yamuna catchment. Of these, 41 with 593 MLD capacity were set up in the last five years, and 11 more are under construction.
Saini said eight new CETPs with a capacity of 147.5 MLD will come up at Pratapgarh, Mirzapur and Badshahpur in Faridabad, Sectors 18, 34 and 37 in Gurugram, Sector 29 in Panipat and Kundli in Sonipat. He directed that CETPs be installed on all 11 major drains leading to the river, and said Corporate Social Responsibility funds could be used if required.
Pollution Control Board chairman J Ganesan told the meeting that some industrial units keep their ETPs shut to save costs and release polluted water. In several cases, industries were allegedly found dumping untreated waste into village ponds through tankers. The chief minister ordered strict action.
Board officials also said 211 MLD of untreated water enters Haryana from Delhi through certain drains, and is treated and sent back. Saini said he will meet the Delhi chief minister on the issue.
