News: Waste Burning Continues at Sector 12 Bus Stand, Gurugram-24-04-2026
Garbage, much of it plastic, was again seen burning on Friday in a plot next to a public toilet at the Sector 12 Haryana Roadways bus stand, a week after HT first reported unauthorised dumping and burning there. Locals say repeated complaints have brought no action.
Environmentalist Ruchika Sethi has taken the matter to Rajesh Verma of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). Her complaint, seen by HT, said nothing had changed despite a formal escalation dated 23 April 2026, and that persistent dumping and burning at a high-footfall transport site exposes commuters, drivers and staff to toxic emissions, including Group 1 carcinogens released by burning plastic.
Sumit Tayal, who travels daily from Faridabad and alights at the stand, said he sees garbage dumped and burnt on the premises every day. Another commuter, Manoj Kumar, said the enquiry counter is barely 200 metres away, yet he has never seen anyone inspect the site. He alleged that officials told him they could do nothing.
Depot manager Gayatri Ahlawat and other roadways authorities did not respond to HT’s request for comment. On April 12, a fire broke out at the bus stand and two fire tenders were sent. Ahlawat had then said she would look into the burning. HT’s earlier report noted that the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the roadways department each held the other responsible for cleaning.
Akansha Tanwar, executive engineer at Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), Gurugram, said she had not received any complaint from the area. A team will be sent for a ground inspection and action will follow its findings, she said.
