News: GMDA Seeks Felling of 72 Roadside Trees in Gurugram-19-04-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has identified 72 trees on 17 sector roads as accident risks because they stand on carriageways and near footpaths, and has asked the forest department to fell them, officials said on Sunday.
A senior GMDA official said the trees are on heavily used roads and that 10 times the number felled will be planted as compensatory afforestation.
The survey by GMDA’s urban environment division located them in sectors 43-44, 30-31, 57-57A, 15-15A, 18-19 and 5-6, between Mor Chowk and Sohna Chowk, on Sheetla Mata Road, from New Colony to Pataudi Chowk, from Bhuteshwar mandir to Basai Chowk, on Old Railway Road near sectors 4-7, and in sectors 84-95, 68, 69, 70, 85, 88 and 90.
Most are Kikar. Others include Neem, Peepal, Jamun, Shisham, Alstonia and Shahtut. Officials said concretisation weakens roots, so trees often get uprooted in storms.
Last October, a 21-year-old died in Sector 12 when his car hit a tree. In November 2025, a 30-year-old man was killed in a similar crash in Sohna, and in September 2024 two students died when their car hit a tree and overturned.
