News: Haryana Sets Deadlines to Stop Sewage in Gurugram Drains-15-04-2026
Civic agencies in Gurugram have been directed by the Haryana government to plug illegal sewage discharge points in the Leg One, Leg Two and Leg Three stormwater drains in phases by June-end, to reduce pollution in the Yamuna River, officials said.
Government estimates put the untreated sewage entering these drains at around 150 million litres per day (MLD), which will be diverted to sewage treatment plants (STPs) once the outlets are sealed.
The directions came at a March 13 meeting chaired by chief secretary Anurag Rastogi, details of which the Haryana State Pollution Department shared recently. A communique said effluent discharge points entering Drain No. 6, Mungeshpur Drain and the three Leg drains may be connected to sewers leading to nearby STPs within the Yamuna Action Plan timelines.
Officials said Leg One carries 55 MLD from four major discharge points. Two are to be plugged by December 31, while discharges from Bajghera and Rezangla Chowk are to stop by June 30 next year. The drain runs from near Nathupur village through Udyog Vihar, sectors 22 and 23, Palam Vihar and Bajghera to the Najafgarh Drain.
Leg Two, which begins near Chakkarpur village and follows Sheetla Mata Road, carries 78 MLD through 17 points, with a June 30 deadline. Leg Three, or the Badshahpur drain, has 37 points releasing over 70 MLD, also to be plugged by June 30.
A senior Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) official said work has begun as a high priority. A tender has been floated for the Leg 2 drain and similar works will follow for the other two.
The meeting was told that Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) of 1.5 MLD in Sector 18, 9 MLD in Sector 37 and 20 MLD in Sector 34 will be built for industrial wastewater, and STPs of 100 MLD each will come up in Behrampur, Dhanwapur and Sector 107. The departments concerned will bear the costs, senior officials said.
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) said project proponents may be required to install CETPs when change of land use (CLU) is granted.
The Haryana State Industrial Infrastructure and Development Corporation (HSIIDC) said HSVP has stated that land for the 9 MLD CETP is in the commercial category and can be sold at commercial rates. Land for the 20 MLD plant has been transferred, and its tender is likely within two months.
