News: 20,000 Trees Planned in Rs 8-Crore Dwarka Expressway Belt-09-04-2026
Green belts costing Rs 8 crore are to be developed along the Dwarka Expressway by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), officials said on Wednesday.
The expressway is owned and operated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which maintains green belts on the central dividers, its main carriageway and GMDA’s service roads. After residents allegedly complained of incomplete belts along the service roads, GMDA surveyed them, officials told HT.
The plan is for around 20,000 trees and 300,000 shrubs over 15 kilometers on both sides. A senior GMDA official said shade-bearing and fruit-bearing trees will be planted, chosen for their ability to check dust. A pipeline carrying recycled water is proposed along the stretch, since tankers would be expensive. Stretches maintained by developers will not be changed.
Jogi Ram Chauhan, executive engineer, environment wing, GMDA, said estimates will be finalised by the end of this month and tenders issued after approval.
According to an RTI reply filed in February, GMDA has 712,364 sq mts of green belt in sectors 81 to 115, of which around 25 per cent is fully developed and 52 per cent partially developed.
Sunil Sareen, vice president, RWA, Imperial Garden Society, Sector 102, welcomed the move and said the belts are deteriorating.
