News: Gurugram Model Road Work Misses Second Deadline-09-04-2026
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has missed a second deadline for turning Vyapar Kendra Road, Hamilton Road and MG Road into model roads, and the project’s cost has escalated.
Work started in February 2024 and was to finish by February 2025. The revised deadline was March 31 this year. Executive engineer Amit Godara told HT that up to 85% is done and the aim is to finish in April, with a few patches of footpath remaining.
Godara blamed unprecedented rain in March 2026 and costlier inputs following the West Asia conflict. Fuel, construction materials and ordinary Portland cement have become dearer, he said, and bitumen has gone from Rs 40 per kg to Rs 80 per kg. In the first year, he said, work was held up by the shifting of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) electricity infrastructure and the tree felling needed for drains and utility ducts. The matter was reviewed last year at a meeting chaired by chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, where the forest department and DHBVN were told to hand over encumbrance-free land on priority.
Under the original plan MG Road was to be recarpeted and 2.1 kilometers of the other two roads made bidirectional. Officials said the design provides three-lane main carriageways, service lanes on either side and designated parking for traffic from Galleria, Vyapar Kendra, Millennium City Centre Metro station and Golf Course Road (GCR), along with wider service roads, cycle tracks, footpaths and underground utility ducts.
Residents are unhappy. Environmentalist Gauri Sarin said thousands of trees were removed, yet roads remain dug up with dust lying exposed. Prabhjyot Singh Panesar of DLF Phase 4 said no work was done through most of 2025 and parts of the footpaths are still broken.
