News: Road Safety Panel Flags Six Corridors Feeding NH-48-03-04-2026
None of the six corridors connecting to the Gurugram-Delhi (NH-48) expressway has adequate basic safety features, a report by the district’s road safety committee has found. It cites absent pedestrian crossing infrastructure, insufficient streetlights, missing road markings and poor signage.
The report, prepared under the zero fatalities initiative of the Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) and reviewed by HT, followed a joint inspection on February 4 at Jharsa Chowk, Atlas Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Panchgaon, Sector 33 and Khoh by senior traffic police, the regional transport authority, the motor vehicle department and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials.
At four accident-prone spots, Iffco, Atlas, Khoh and Sector 33, where six to seven deaths have occurred in the past three years, the team found exposed hard objects along shoulders or kerbs, unsafe public transport stops, inadequate lighting and no space for pedestrians.
Overspeeding on all six stretches and wrong-side driving at five were the main violations leading to accidents. Illegal parking on shoulders was seen at Jharsa, Khoh and Panchgaon. The report recommends enforcement drives against speeding and zig-zag barriers on service roads. A senior DRSC official said NHAI site engineers must demarcate hard roadside objects within 2.4 m of shoulders and install warning signs and speed humps in school and hospital zones.
A senior NHAI official said routine safety audits and the third phase of Network Survey Vehicle surveys are under way before the monsoon.
Traffic police data shows Gurugram had 1,024 accidents in 2024, of which 478 were fatal, and 1,112 in 2025 with 472 fatalities. NH-48 saw 247 accidents and 150 fatalities in 2024, and 233 accidents and 127 fatalities in 2025.
