News: Hawkers, Autos, Garbage Choke Four Gurugram Metro Stations-01-04-2026
Encroached footpaths, illegally parked autos and uncleared garbage outside major metro stations in Gurugram have drawn complaints from residents and commuters, who say safety and sanitation are being compromised.
An HT spot check on Monday at Millennium City Centre, IFFCO Chowk, Sikanderpur and MG Road stations found carts and hawkers blocking footpaths and pavements. At all four, auto-rickshaws and taxis were parked illegally along service lanes. Commuter Priyanshi Verma said hundreds of autos line up and choke the entire service lane, particularly at MG Road and Sikanderpur. Another regular, Ashok Darbara, said his car gets stuck every morning because autos and rickshaws stop wherever they like.
Sanitation was poor mainly at MG Road and Sikanderpur, where plastic and other waste lay dumped near the stations and gave off a stench. At Millennium City Centre and IFFCO Chowk, hawkers cooking on pavements were throwing waste on the ground, and a green belt near IFFCO Chowk was littered, allegedly by vendors.
Most of these problems lay outside station premises, in areas under MCG and GMDA. The stations themselves come under Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
Kamal Malhotra said uncleared filth had bred mosquitoes at IFFCO Chowk and Sikanderpur. Harish Rana said stations with such heavy footfall lacked basic sanitation. Mathilde R, a French expat who moved from South Delhi two years ago and crosses Sikanderpur daily, said she had never seen the station clean and called it chaotic and massively encroached.
A senior Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) official said encroachments are a top priority and a team will inspect Millennium City Centre station and clear footpaths and pavements.
Jaiveer Yadav, joint commissioner at Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), said two teams work in shifts, from 8 AM to 2 PM and from 2pm to 8pm, and 90% of encroachments at metro stations have been removed. He said the teams would be asked to check again.
A senior traffic police official, who asked not to be named, said technical teams will inspect illegal parking and steps will be taken to decongest the areas.
