News: Homeowners’ Biggest Regrets: Parking, Timing, Interiors-01-04-2026
A Reddit thread in which homeowners described what they would do differently has thrown up a range of regrets, from money decisions to lifestyle mismatches.
Buying late was a common complaint. One user said talking to neighbours revealed they had bought the same home for at least 30% less.
Parking was another sore point. A buyer said most owners in his building paid the builder Rs 5 lakh each for a covered slot, while three did not. When the law later mandated a parking spot per flat, the association sued the three demanding fairness, but the court ruled in their favour and they got their spots free, apart from their legal fees.
Lifestyle issues surprised some buyers. One said the family’s first flat was in a vegetarian-dominated community where children who had eaten an omelette were shunned for a while at play, and they sold and moved when they could afford to. Another bought near a road and playground for sunlight and open views, only to face constant noise and spend on thick glass windows to cut the honking.
Orientation was overlooked by one user, whose apartment gets a lot of sun in summer and none in winter. Others wished they had spoken to neighbours beforehand about maintenance and facilities.
On budgeting, a user said they "played it safe" with a 3+1 BHK when stretching the budget by 10% would have fetched a 4+1 BHK. The difference today would be over Rs 80 lakh, the user said.
Some regretted not looking at resale homes, where a similar price could have bought a larger flat with a better layout. One advised against builders’ pre-fitted interiors, saying a bare-shell apartment would have saved Rs 14 lakh on cost and registry and allowed better interiors.
Another admitted not knowing that under construction-linked plans he was not supposed to pay more than 25% in the first two years. By the time he understood that he could have booked and paid the rest over time, prices had risen by Rs 1 crore.
Not everyone was unhappy. One buyer wrote that they had "lived and learned" and would not exchange the journey for anything.
