News: Haryana Orders Government Schools to Fix Taps and Toilets-31-03-2026
Government schools across Haryana have been directed to repair basic facilities after inspections and field reports showed poor hygiene and infrastructure, officials said.
In a communication to district education officers (DEOs) on Friday, the principal secretary, school education department, said cleanliness, drinking water, boundary walls and hygiene facilities in certain schools were "not satisfactory". In some, taps and washrooms were non-functional or missing and sanitary fittings were not properly installed.
School heads must take up minor repairs first, including water pipelines, taps, storage systems, toilets and damaged boundary walls or fencing. Principals and headmasters will be directly responsible. The notice gives no deadline, saying only that the work is a top priority. District authorities will monitor progress and submit reports.
The department had earlier allowed spending of up to Rs 1 lakh on such works. The cap may be raised to Rs 5 lakh, though there is no official confirmation, according to information gathered during a spot visit on Monday. Officials said most works cost under Rs 1 lakh and can be met from the Children’s Welfare Fund (CWF), and schools short of funds can approach headquarters.
Gurugram DEO Indu Boken said none of the district’s 130 higher and senior secondary schools has infrastructure gaps.
