News: Double-Decker Plan Scrapped for Hero Honda Chowk Stretch-30-03-2026
The proposal for a double-decker elevated structure carrying both road and metro between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk has been abandoned on feasibility grounds, officials said on Sunday. Separate structures will be built instead.
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) will alter the alignment of its proposed Sector 10 and Sector 37 stations so that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) can build a 3.3-km flyover for road traffic on the stretch. A senior GMRL official said the double-decker was meant to save space and cost, but detailed discussions with stakeholders led to the decision to keep the two apart.
In a March 25 letter to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), GMRL said it would suitably modify the alignment to avoid any infringement or conflict with NHAI’s road works. The letter noted that at Sector 10 NHAI’s proposed right of way (ROW) falls in forest land, where the utility corridor is proposed, and asked GMDA to expedite approval for diversion of that land, calling a clear ROW critical for timely metro work.
GMDA officials said they will now send a proposal for a six-lane elevated road to the state government for final approval.
Officials said it was decided in January 2026 to build a 3.3-km elevated road here instead of widening the surface road, and NHAI estimated the cost at Rs 182 crore. When GMDA sought GMRL’s approval of the design, the metro corporation suggested the double-decker.
A senior NHAI official had earlier said the authority would build the structure as a deposit work for GMDA. No separate tender will be issued, as the road is already part of the Gurugram-Pataudi to Rewari Highway (NH-352W) plans and will be built by the company executing that project.
