News: Gurugram Roads: Long Signals, Wrong-Side Driving, Barriers-30-03-2026
Damaged safety installations and slack enforcement continue to mark Gurugram’s arterial roads despite repeated interventions, and residents say the result is unsafe driving amid constant congestion.
Residents interviewed during a recent assignment listed familiar problems: predictable jams, long signal cycles, potholed stretches and poor enforcement of driving norms. On Golf Estate Road, back-to-back signals with peak-hour waits of up to four minutes have become a major bottleneck, and commuters pointed to narrow, badly maintained carriageways encroached upon by wrongful parking. A daily commuter said similar hotspots on Golf Course Extension Road, Ambedkar Marg, near the Millennium City Metro Station and on SPR had become a "new normal" that civic bodies rarely address.
Spot checks confirmed slow traffic at these points. With little enforcement or signage, gig workers and two-wheeler riders were seen driving on the wrong side to save time.
Collision cushions at several junctions were still damaged or poorly maintained a month after the problem was reported. In February, an HT team found nearly 90% of crash tyre barriers broken, faded or dislodged at Z Chowk, Signature Towers, Jharsa Chowk, DLF Pirvana South in Sector 77, and from 32nd Avenue towards Kherki Daula toll plaza on the Delhi-Gurugram (NH 48) expressway.
The district traffic police installed around 400 hazard markers in 2025 but confirmed that no records are kept to assess whether such barriers reduce crash severity.
Residents alleged that complaints are closed after civic bodies post pictures of temporary fixes. A daily Delhi-Gurugram commuter said congestion on NH 48 adds nearly an hour to his journey because vehicle numbers exceed road capacity.
