News: Home Sales in Nine Cities Below 1 Lakh: PropEquity-30-03-2026
Housing sales in India’s top nine cities dropped 13% year-on-year to 98,761 units in the first quarter of 2026, from 1,13,602 units in Q1 of 2025, according to a PropEquity report. It is the first time in 18 quarters that sales have slipped under the 1 lakh mark.
Mumbai, Pune and Thane recorded the steepest falls, of 20%, 25% and 24% respectively. Bengaluru topped sales with 17,991 units, followed by Pune with 16,144 and Thane with 15,959. Delhi-NCR sold 12,141 units, Hyderabad 11,546, down 16%, Mumbai 9,186, Chennai 4,765 and Kolkata 3,872.
Samir Jasuja, founder and CEO, PropEquity, said sales continued to moderate, with Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru as outliers, and attributed the reduction to low supply in most cities. Close to 22,000 fewer units were supplied than in the same period last year.
Delhi-NCR posted the highest growth in launches at 17,227 units, up 89% year-on-year and 8% quarter-on-quarter. Bengaluru regained the top spot with 17,782 units, a 10% quarterly rise despite a 24% annual decline. Pune launched 13,084 units, up 31% annually. Thane fell 20% to 14,354 units, Hyderabad 38% to 10,938, Mumbai 17% to 7,162, Navi Mumbai 24% to 6,367 and Kolkata 17% to 2,588. Chennai’s 2,909 units were 62% lower year-on-year.
Jasuja said high-ticket launches hurt absorption in Delhi-NCR, which for the first time post-COVID saw more supply than Pune, Hyderabad and Thane.
