News: Mumbai Landlord Drops Unmarried Couple Before Move-In-10-03-2026
A Reddit post about a landlord in Mumbai who withdrew a flat the night before move-in has triggered a discussion on the difficulties unmarried couples face in the city’s rental market.
The tenant wrote that he and his girlfriend had searched in western Mumbai for several weeks and were turned down repeatedly, by brokers and owners alike, once they disclosed they were unmarried. They eventually finalised a 1BHK in Malad East after meeting the owner through a broker. The rent was agreed verbally and they were to move in the next day.
Around 10 pm on the eve of the move, the landlord called to say he was no longer comfortable renting to them. When pressed on what had changed within a few hours, the post said, he admitted he had found a married couple willing to pay the same rent. Believing the deal was done, the couple had cancelled another flat earlier that day and lost Rs 10,000 in token money, and that flat has since gone to someone else.
The Redditor said the owner should have stated his preference earlier, and complained that while bad tenants are a common grievance in the city, such conduct by owners "somehow gets normalised".
Several users asked why no agreement had been signed. One said a rent agreement must be signed, uploaded and registered, followed by police verification and a no objection from the society, which takes at least 3-4 days, and that the couple should not have planned to move in without one.
Real estate consultants say renting to unmarried couples remains a sensitive subject. Ketan Joshi, a consultant from Mumbai’s western suburbs, said there are cases where the landlord is willing but the housing society does not allow it, so "the ecosystem is not fully ready yet". Such decisions vary by society and locality, he added.
