News: Mumbai Completes 2,545 Slum Rehabilitation Projects: Survey-09-03-2026
Mumbai has seen 2,545 slum rehabilitation (SRA) projects completed over nearly three decades, with around 500 of them, or about 18%, finished in the last five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Maharashtra Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled in the state assembly last week.
From the scheme’s inception to December 2025, 2,83,955 slum-dwelling families in Mumbai have been moved into formal housing. In Thane, all 51 projects are complete and 7,815 families have been rehabilitated. By comparison, 2,067 projects had been completed and 2,23,471 families rehabilitated as of August 2021. As of December 2015, nearly 1,512 projects had been undertaken and 1.62 lakh families rehabilitated, which means more than 1,000 projects were taken up in the last 10 years.
The Slum Rehabilitation Authority, set up in 1995, implements slum redevelopment in Maharashtra. Private developers provide free housing to slum dwellers and receive additional construction rights, which let them build and sell more flats on the same land in the open market to recover costs.
Other agencies also build affordable housing. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the state’s nodal agency, has constructed 5.27 lakh dwelling units from its establishment in 1977 up to November 2025. The City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has built 2.30 lakh units from 1970 up to December 2025.
Under the Union government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the aim is 19.40 lakh houses in 409 cities across Maharashtra through government bodies and public-private partnerships. Up to December 2025, 10.15 lakh units had been sanctioned and 8.75 lakh completed. Under PMAY-U 2.0, which will assist one crore urban poor and middle-class families nationwide, 3.21 lakh beneficiaries have registered in Maharashtra and the Centre has disbursed Rs 246.93 crore.
