News: World Bank Asked to Fund 60% of Gurugram Metro Phase Two-24-02-2026
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) said on Monday it has sent the tender document and loan proposal for phase two of the Gurugram metro to the World Bank for scrutiny and approval.
A senior official said the papers went last week and clearance is expected next month. The loan sought is 60% of the project cost excluding taxes, currently about Rs 2,800 crore, and would rise if costs increase.
The separate spur from Sector 5 to Old Gurugram railway station, included in the phase two tender, is likely to be delayed and taken up later because the World Bank has recommended a social and environmental impact assessment.
Last year GMRL had sought Rs 1,613 crore from a European funding agency, and the matter went to the Department of Economic Affairs in the finance ministry. With no response from that agency, it was decided to seek the whole loan from the World Bank. A Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited meeting last November resolved that funding would come only from the World Bank or the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
The Old Gurugram Metro is 28.5 km long. The first-phase tender, floated last September for about Rs 1,277 crore, covers Millennium City Centre to Sector 9. Phase two, from Sector 9 to DLF Cyber City, is estimated at nearly Rs 3,500 crore, and phase three, the Sector 33 depot, at over Rs 400 crore.
Phase two stations are planned at Sector 7, Sector 4, Sector 5, Gurugram railway station, Ashok Vihar, Sector 3, Bajghera Road, Palam Vihar Extension, Palam Vihar, Sector 23A and Sector 22. GMRL has changed the route from Sector 22 to DLF Cyber City, moving three stations.
