News: MCG Plans Central Control for 1 Lakh Street Lights-10-02-2026
The Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) will install Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) panels in all four municipal zones so that street lights can be operated and tracked digitally from one place, officials said on Monday.
The roughly Rs 8 crore project will bring more than 100,000 street lights onto a single network with remote switching and real-time monitoring from a dedicated control room. Officials expect lower electricity wastage, quicker fault detection and repair, and longer equipment life through regulated voltage.
At present field staff and contractors switch lights on and off, which leads to delays, lights burning in daytime and dark stretches at night. Recurring complaints about such lapses have added to the civic body’s power bill.
Smart panels will connect to a cloud-based server with GPS-enabled tracking. Lights will operate automatically on pre-fed sunrise and sunset timings, and faults or outages will trigger instant alerts with exact locations for maintenance teams.
Chief engineer Vijay Dhaka called the project a milestone towards making Gurugram a smart city, saying it will bring major power savings, better monitoring and greater transparency and accountability.
Technical evaluation is complete and work orders have been issued. Installation is due to start shortly, after which the system will produce round-the-clock status reports for all sectors and wards.
