News: Gurugram Cracks Down on Illegal Sewer Links to Drains-05-02-2026
Gurugram’s civic agencies have stepped up action against unauthorised connections to the city’s three master drain legs, officials said on Wednesday. Leg I runs from Nathupur to New Palam Vihar, Leg II from Sector 42 to 107, and Leg III is the Badshahpur drain.
Teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will inspect sites to remove illegal sewer links and prevent new ones. Locations include Sihi and Kherki Dhaula in Sector 84, Khanda near Anjana Colony, the NH 48 expressway upstream near Info Tech Park, Badshahpur village near the Southern Peripheral Road, and Rezangla Chowk.
GMDA last week identified 53 tapping locations in Legs II and III, which flow into the Najafgarh drain, or Sahibi river, in Delhi. Three more points near Rezang La Chowk and in Sector 76, and four on Old Delhi Gurugram road in Udyog Vihar, have now been identified in Leg I. Tapping means illegal connections are cut or diverted via sewer lines and pumps to treatment plants, so sewage does not reach drains feeding the Yamuna.
A senior MCG official said about 20 illegal connections were severed before last year’s monsoon and similar action will begin soon, with vigilance teams told to watch underground drains closely.
At Yamuna Clean Action Plan meetings in January, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) directed that biochemical oxygen demand in the drains stay under 10 mg/L. All three legs currently measure between 80 and 110 mg/L.
HSPCB officials said some tanker operators are dumping sewer waste in open areas and drains, and FIRs will be lodged with police help. A joint action plan aims to tap 55.4 million litres per day in Leg I, 78 MLD in Leg II and 56.2 MLD in Leg III, across a 50.5 km underground network.
