Discrepancies in property tax data of residents are impacting the revenue for Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG). Assessment bills sent out by MCG have been returned by a majority of residents, who pointed out that the bills did not correspond to their properties.

Officials said the civic body recently sent 505 notices to defaulters to pay up their dues, but most of them claimed there were discrepancies in the data. The civic body is estimated to generate an income of Rs 500 crore from property tax, however, only Rs 187 crore has been collected so far this fiscal year — amounting to 37% of the target.

“The discrepancies in data are affecting our property tax collection. We have so far generated nearly Rs 190 crore from property tax, but we could have generated more with the correct data of defaulters with long pending dues,” an MCG official said.

A total of 49 notices were sent out in zone 1, 114 in zone 2, 166 in zone 3 and 176 in zone 4. Officials said that they are working to rectify the errors. The civic body had organised camps inside several colonies to rectify the property tax data. However, residents are still complaining about the inaccuracy in data.“The process of self-certification is complex and does not work for everyone. We are still facing problems in correcting the data due to which we cannot pay tax. There are certain residents who have got the data corrected in the property tax camp and still have their data incorrect due to which they are unable to pay the tax,” said Vikas Yadav, a resident.A survey by a private agency in January last year had found that 5.14 lakh properties come under the MCG. After the survey was completed, the residents had complained that the new property IDs generated had incorrect details, creating a faulty database of the residents’ properties. The property owners can self-verify the data on ulbhryndc.org and pay their outstanding dues. The property tax dues can also be deposited at the citizen facilitation centres (CFCs) besides the MCG offices. MCG officials said that the sewerage and water connections of the defaulters' properties will be disconnected and their properties will be sealed if dues are not paid on time.
