News: Dust & defeaning noise: Gurugram residents want fourth floor policy scrapped-27-05-2023
Rampant construction of stilt plus four-floor buildings is causing noise and air pollution in several parts of the city, residents have alleged, submitting a petition and appealing the district administration to scrap the policy that allows such structures to be built on residential plots.
Currently, the policy is on hold after resident groups protested against it this February and the government formed a panel to review it. The residents of sectors 14, 49, 50, 52, 53, 56 and 72, South City-1 and DLF-1 areas submitted the petition over the policy to the panel on Friday. “I am considering shifting to another city. This used to be a peaceful and green locality until such constructions began, making it a dust bowl with constant noise pollution,” said Parimal Bardhan, who has been living in DLF-1 since 2000.
Bardhan added that population density will eventually increase because of these builder floors, which often accommodate one family on every storey, and strain the availability of amenities such as water supply.
Ruchika Sethi, a resident of Nirvana Country in Sector 50, alleged that the foundation of her house had weakened because of construction of an adjacent building.
“Demolition dust is highly toxic and fine dust remains in the air for days. Dust pollution becomes worse as construction materials are dumped in the open and close to our house,” she added. Health experts, too, said uncovered construction material was harmful, specifically more so in residential areas.
