According to sources, every proposed ward has three to four such colonies, but the authorities have not taken up any development work in these colonies despite the sta government’s announcement of regularisation last year.
More than 100 unauthorised colonies have been included in the 40 wards proposed in the delimitation draft for the MCG polls.
The ad-hoc committee reconstituted by the urban local bodies (ULB) department approved the draft redrawing boundaries of wards falling under MCG last Thursday. The draft will now be sent to the state government for final approval.
Residents of the illegal colonies have expressed their dissatisfaction with the move, saying they have been only added in the proposed wards but no civic amenities have been provided, even though they have been living there for the past 20 years.
“There were announcements by the state government about regularisation of unauthorised colonies, but we have been living without
“The ad-hoc committee has divided this area into three wards, but what is the use of this when the corporation can’t provide any civic amenities?” a resident living near the depot said.
Meanwhile, the panel members said there was no option but to include them in the wards as these colonies fall under MCG’s jurisdiction. “Keeping in view the MCG elections, these colonies have been included so that the residents can cast their votes. We will look into the problems related to basic amenities in these colonies and work towards their possible resolution,” said Yashpal Batra, a member of the ad-hoc committee and former senior deputy mayor.
Another committee member said these colonies are likely to be regularised.
Some illegal colonies have been regularised in the past and once these are regularised too, efforts will be made to provide civic facilities to the MCG deployed a private agency to carry out a population survey of the city, on the basis of which the delimitation had to be conducted. According to its survey, the city’s population is 24.1 lakh. The ad-hoc committee constituted earlier, however, raised objections on the survey, and it was then decided that delimitation would be done on the basis of population as per the city’s Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) enrolments. The delimitation draft has been prepared considering nearly 12 lakh PPP enrolments in the city, sources said.
