Gurgaon: The traffic-plagued 3.2km-stretch between Hero Honda Chowk on NH-8 and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk may soon be decongested.

Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh on Friday suggested construction of an elevated road between the two intersections and said he will take up the matter with the central government for speedy approval of the project.

Singh made the statements at an hours-long meeting with district officials, with whom he also discussed metro connectivity between Old Gurgaon and Delhi, construction of a medical college in the district, multi-level parking, concerns over groundwater depletion and other development work.

“I will take the issue to the Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari, and I am confident that he will approve the construction of elevated road on this stretch,” Singh, who is also a Union minister of state in the ministry of corporate affairs, said.

Currently, the road from the Hero Honda Chowk to the Umang Bhardwaj Chowk is being widened from two lanes to four by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as part of a larger infrastructure project. The same work also involves building a flyover at the Umang Bhardwaj Chowk. If the lawmaker’s proposal goes ahead, there will be an elevated road instead of the flyover.

The arterial stretch between the two key intersections is often choked with traffic. It provides access to sectors 9, 10 and 37 apart from a crucial link to National Highway-8 from Rohtak and Jhajjar via the Basai road. Separately, it is used by residents of Old Gurgaon as an alternative route to reach the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

When asked about ongoing efforts to build multi-level parking facilities, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) officials told him that 60% of construction work had been completed in Sadar Bazar and was set to be finished by March next year.

Gurgaon police commissioner Kala Ramachandran also told the MP at the meeting that they had begun the process to fix speed limits for all areas in the city. Around 150 people lost their lives to road accidents in Gurgaon last year.“is a need to install more traffic lights and trials have already begun at Rajiv Chowk and MDI Chowk,” she said.

On metro connectivity, the MoS was told that the proposal for the metro corridor between Palam Vihar and Sector 21-Dwarka in Delhi had been sent to the central government for approval.

The construction of a medical college in Gurgaon’s Kherki Majra was ongoing and was likely to be completed by 2024.

On Friday, the Union minister expressed concern about levels of groundwater in the district and asked officials to ensure efforts for conservation of the Damdama and Sultanpur lakes. “It is important to work for conservation of water and recharge ground water through rainwater harvesting,” he said.

The lawmaker further urged officials and agencies to speed up development work that was delayed in two years of the pandemic. “Now we have to expedite work to make up for the lost years,” he said.
