News: Quality checks for buildings constructed by MCG soon: Gurugram Mayor Madhu Azad-10-06-2022
URUGRAM: MCG will soon begin an inspection of public buildings constructed by the civic body to check construction quality. These buildings include community centres, dispensaries and schools. Mayor Madhu Azad has also directed the engineering department to submit a list of public buildings constructed by MCG since January 1, 2018.
Azad has asked the chief engineer and superintending engineers to submit a ward-wise list of public buildings already constructed and under construction by June 17. If the buildings fail the quality check, action will be taken against the officials concerned and contractors, the mayor said.
“After a building is constructed, there is a time period in which minor construction flaws, if any, appear, they can be fixed by the contractor that built it without spending any additional amount by MCG. So, buildings should be checked after their construction is complete as well,” she added.
The engineering department has already given directions for the inspections. “We have directed executive engineers to prepare a list of public buildings within three days. After the list is made, a schedule will be made accordingly to carry out inspections,” superintending engineer Vivek Gill said.
Residents, meanwhile, said the checks should be done during construction. “The community centre in our sector was made in 2018. At that time, we had complained about the construction quality to then MCG commissioner, but no action was taken. This exercise will be futile since no action will be taken against the contractors who have already been paid for carrying out such shoddy construction. Moreover, lab tests cannot be done now, years after construction was completed,” said Lalit Suraj Bhola, a member of residents’ group United Gurugram-RWA.
Ward 4 councillor Virender Raj said, In my ward, three community centres were constructed, out of which one is in bad shape due to its poor quality. Such inspections should be carried out on a regular basis.”
