GURUGRAM: To accelerate the use of recycled water at construction sites, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is now exploring the possibility of providing temporary water connection s to builders. Currently, builders looking to use recycled water at project sites have to hire tankers and fill them from the various hydrants linked to treated wastewater pipelines across the city.
These proposed temporary connections, officials said, could boost the use of the 323 million litres per day (MLD) recycled water produced in the city. At present, only 50% — 170 MLD — of this is utilised even as the GMDA is planning to increase the usage of recycled water to 78% over the coming months through the implementation of various major projects in the city.
At a meeting of GMDA’s core planning cell (CPC) earlier this week, chief executive officer (CEO) Sudhir Rajpal had directed officials to examine the feasibility of providing temporary connections of recycled water to builders for utilisation at construction sites.
“The idea is to ease the process for builders by giving them the option of taking a temporary connection and removing the requirement for tankers altogether. If the process is found feasible, builders will be able to decide whether they prefer to take a temporary connection or use tankers to transport the water,” a senior GMDA official privy to the matter said.
Industries that use more than 1,000 kilolitres of water per day are currently mandated to use recycled water for their processes.
Increasing use of recycled wastewater has been an area of focus for the GMDA lately. During a meeting in December last year, the chairperson of the Haryana Water Resources Authority directed that industrial and infrastructure units step up efforts to use recycled water in their processes as per the rules, failing which action would be taken against them.
