News: Gurugram: Road is not ready after four years, residents protest-03-04-2022

GURUGRAM: Residents of several group housing societies in sectors 78 and 79 hit the streets on Saturday to protest against the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for failing to complete the construction of a master road connecting Sector 79 to Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) in over four years.
Several residents held posters and raised slogans against the authority for not providing basic civic infrastructure. The protesters pointed out that in 2018, the GMDA allotted a tender for building a 3.3km-long master road, along with drains, for Rs 18.21 crore. The project was supposed to take six months. But even after four years, there has been no concrete progress. Several complaints to the authorities and the CM and a letter campaign targetting the PMO have yielded no result.
Dhirendra Singh, a resident of Mapsko Mountville, said that the work has not progressed for the last four months. “We do not have a road which directly connects us to other parts of the city. The GMDA has failed to build a road that is not even four km long in the past four years.”
The road will not only cater to residents of sectors 77, 78 and 79 but will facilitate traffic from the new sectors to bypass the Kherki-Daula toll plaza, the residents said. They added that the unpaved roads in the area have aggravated dust pollution.
The superintending engineer of GMDA, VK Sharma, said that the contractor has denied executing the work and the authority has taken punitive action against him. “We awarded the contract in 2018, but the agency could not get site clearance at that time. Now, it is citing price escalation. We have already initiated a penalty of Rs. 91.07 lakh against the agency for the project delay. We have also given it a final opportunity to execute the work. The agency will inform us about whether it will execute the project or not by April 7,” Sharma said.
