The Gurugram traffic police said goods vehicles have to mandatorily follow lane discipline on all national highways (NH) across the city from Wednesday.

There are four highways passing through Gurugram — the NH-48, also known as the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway or Delhi-Jaipur Highway; NH-248-BB, also known as Dwarka Expressway; NH-248A, also known as Sohna Road and NH-148A, also known as Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road.

In a directive to transporters, the traffic police said that such vehicles must be driven on the second-most left lanes of four-lane highways, or on the middle lane of three-lane highways.

The traffic police also held a meeting with private transporters on Monday regarding the orders.

“We have given transporters a week’s notice to spread awareness among drivers of goods vehicles after which we will start imposing penalties for not following lane discipline. In this seven-day period, the traffic police will also be setting up signs across all highways regarding lane discipline for goods vehicles,” said Ravinder Singh Tomar, DCP (traffic).

The traffic police said that these new measures are part of their ongoing drive, initiated in September last year, to ensure heavy vehicles follow lane discipline on highways so that the number of accidents as well as congestion can be reduced.

In the first six months of the drive, the traffic police fined 11,568 drivers of heavy vehicles â‚¹5,000 each for violating lane discipline.

“To effectively implement lane discipline, the traffic police first need to ensure that cars and two-wheelers don’t drive on the lanes reserved for goods vehicles. Also, the Gurugram traffic police should have given at least a month’s time to implement the change as a large number of vehicles cross the city daily and it takes time to spread the message,” said Kultaran Singh Atwal, president, All India Motor Transport Congress.
