News: In a first, MCG imposes fines on 38 shopkeepers for using plastic materials-13-03-2022
Gurugram: In a first, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has fined 38 shopkeepers of the Sector 57 market for using plastic materials, said the officials on Sunday
The development comes a month after the Haryana Urban Local Bodies (ULB) directed municipal corporations across the state to increase measures against plastic material usage in their respective jurisdictions.
During the drive conducted on Saturday night, enforcement teams of the MCG also seized plastic materials used in these shops, and gave strict instructions to the shopkeepers to stop using the same.
“The MCG teams have been taking strict action in the area to ensure compliance of the Plastic Waste Management Act, as amended by the central government. The rule also prohibits manufacture, import, storage, distribution, sale, and use of plastic materials, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene. These include earbuds with plastic sticks, air balloons, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, decorative polystyrene (thermocol), plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, among other items,” said SS Rohilla, public relations officer (PRO) of the MCG. The list also includes plastic cutlery, plastic used for wrapping or packing food items, plastic used on invitation cards and cigarette packets, and PVC banners.
Under the Haryana Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1988, the MCG banned the usage of plastic materials in the city from March last year, and announced that usage of such materials will lead to a penalty, amounting to as much as ₹25,000.
