News: Feel trapped when it rains, MCG’s flood-check plan only on paper, say Essel Tower residents-30-07-2021
Gurgaon: Residents of Essel Tower, located on MG Road, are miffed with lackadaisical attitude of the civic authorities in providing a permanent solution to the waterlogging problem in their area. This, they say, feels like being trapped in their home every time it rains and the situation after Wednesday’s showers was no different.
They pointed out that the municipal corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) in June sanctioned around Rs 35 lakh for the construction of a sump well —a pit or reservoir serving as a drain — to prevent water accumulation in front of the main gate of the society, however, the work has not been started yet.
Brij Gupta, RWA general secretary, said, “After repeated complaints for 18 months, the MCG finally decided to get three sump wells constructed. The project was supposed to be start from June 15 and completed within six months. However, not a single brick has been laid by the contractor.”
Moreover, the master drain and sewer lines in the area are also blocked leading to backflow of waste water, they alleged.
Rajeev Sinha, RWA president, said, “As our society is situated in a low-lying area, rain water is also entering the towers. There is no coordination between the civic authorities and they always work in reactionary manner but do not take preventive measures before the onset of monsoon.”
Meanwhile, Sunder Sheoran, executive engineer of MCG said, “I will look into the matter and the work will begin soon. We will be issuing notice to the contractor and seek a reply on the cause for delay in starting the work. Action will be taken accordingly.”
A senior official of GMDA said, “The drainage connection was plugged because sewer was flowing through it, now it has been opened. Moreover, a tender has been allotted to rectify the drainage network along the MG road towards IFFCO Chowk, however it could not be executed due to heavy traffic movement and limited right of way.”
