News: MCG move to scrap desilting tender draws councillors’ fire-27-07-2021
Gurgaon: Heated discussions are common at MCG’s council meetings. But on Monday, a fierce argument broke out between the councillors and officials of the engineering wing over the latter’s decision to scrap a tender related to sewage desilting in ward number 22.
At a meeting chaired by MLA Sudhir Singla and mayor Madhu Azad, the councillors alleged some MCG officials were not allowing the development of the city by putting their files of development work on hold. They blamed a superintending engineer for the cancellation of the tender after the work of desilting had already begun. The tender of Rs 42 lakh was given to a private firm in May.
Anoop Singh, councillor of ward number 6, told TOI, “One of the tenders in ward number 22 was cancelled. I just asked a superintending engineer to give an explanation on why the tender was cancelled due to which an argument broke out between the councillors and the engineering wing officials. We expect better cooperation from the officials for the development of the city.”
“The tender of Rs 42 lakh was given to a firm in May. Around 30% of the work has already been done and now it has stopped in the monsoon since the tender has been cancelled. Most of our files are kept on hold due to which development work suffers,” said another councillor, who was present at the meeting.
The mayor, however, told the officials that the development work suggested by the councillors should be done on priority basis “since they are the representatives of the public”. “Everybody is doing their job here. If anyone is working under any official’s influence, there are provisions to raise the complaint and conduct an inquiry. But this is not fair to level allegations at a meeting in the presence of other officials,” said a senior MCG official.
