MCG sealing team runs into protest by shopkeepers
GURUGRAM: The enforcement team of Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) faced resistance by shopkeepers while carrying out a demolition and sealing drive in Sector 4/7 Chowk on Tuesday.
The department had received several complaints about encroachment by street vendors leading to congestion on the road. During an inspection on Tuesday night, it was found that a shop near the chowk, Harish Bakery, had encroached the footpath and the area in front of its premises by placing vendors selling eatables.
When district town planner RS Batth directed the manager of the bakery to ensure that the encroachment is removed within a week’s time, the staff of the shop got annoyed, officials said.

Within minutes, the bakery manager, along with the staff, allegedly instigated nearby traders and other people against the DTP, and they tried to manhandle the members of the enforcement team. Local councillors soon arrived at the spot and requested the department for a permanent solution.
Batth said the bakery management was directed to remove the encroachment. “They submitted an apology for misbehaving with the enforcement team. The team carried out a survey of the entire area for two hours and took note of building norm violations,” he said.
Sources said the bakery and restaurant is constructed on a residential plot and may lead to a major mishap in case a fire breaks out. When asked, officials said the department is looking into the matter and action will be taken accordingly.
Meanwhile, a team led by Batth and assistant town planner Ashish Sharma also visited Block C of Sushant Lok 1 to identify violations. “The plots with violations were noted. Those carrying out violations after obtaining occupation certificates were also inspected. DTCP will carry out a demolition drive in licensed colonies soon,” an official said.
