3 model junctions on Rezangla-Bijwasan Road soon
Gurgaon: The Gurugram Development Metropolitan Authority (GDMA) has said it will convert three intersections on the stretch connecting Rezangla Chowk and Bijwasan into model junctions.
The project is being executed by GMDA along with Rahgiri Foundation and WRI Foundation. As a part of the same project, the junction in Sector 44 was revamped last month. The main objective is to make streets safer and more convenient for the pedestrians, non-motorised transport (NMT) as well as commuters, said officials.
As a part of the project, markings will be made on the junction with a pedestrian island. The junctions will be redesigned as per the guidelines of the Indian Road Congress.
The official said ideally the width of a pedestrian island is 2.5 metres, but four-meter-wide cycle tracks will also be developed on all multiple sides of the intersections. “We have finished making the six-laning of the stretch and have also completed the work on footpaths and cycle tracks. To further ease the movement of cyclists and pedestrians, we will be now making model junctions on the stretch,” said a senior official. The project is expected to be completed by next month, he added. He said they chose this particular road as the first among many to have NMT facilities as it sees a heavy crowd.
Around 50,000 vehicles cross the road daily as it connects old Gurgaon and New Palam Vihar with Dwarka in Delhi. TOI had earlier reported that after the redesign of the sector 44 junction, GMDA plans to carry out a similar project for pedestrian islands at other spots across the city.
Meanwhile, the metropolitan authority is also planning cycle tracks on at least 10 different stretches in the city totalling around 60 km.
