Land sharks took over school plot, earned lakhs in rentals
Gurgaon: A one-acre land owned by HSVP in Sector 9 and earmarked for a primary school has been encroached by the land mafia to build unauthorised structures. Multiple concrete structures, one garage and 350 shanties had come up on the land, and those were rented out to different people for a total monthly rental of Rs 7 lakh, according to HSVP.
An enforcement team of HSVP, in one of the biggest drives carried out in the city so far, cleared the land from encroachers on Wednesday. The land’s market value runs into crores. It had been occupied by the encroachers for around a year.
The enforcement team of estate office-1 of HSVP along with nearly 50 policemen demolished shanties and concrete structures. The encroachers had also developed a vehicle service centre and a garage on the land.
According to an official, the land mafia collected around Rs 2,000 from each occupant of 350 shanties every month. They also collected rentals from occupants of concrete buildings and garage. The HSVP official said the encroachers earned around Rs 7 lakh per month in total.
“They are locals. No one came forward and protested when the drive was going on. We are trying to track the encroachers,” said HSVP junior engineer Sandeep Lot.
The team also cleared around 1.5 acres of HSVP land located in front of the government college in Sector 9.
“Around 50 shanties had come up on the land and many people from adjoining colonies had extended their houses by making toilets, store rooms and parking sheds there,” said Lot, adding that they had to face stiff opposition from the encroachers, but the team managed to clear the land with the help of the police.
