GURUGRAM: After repeated complaints from the residents of new sectors regarding encroachments in the area, MCG and the department of town and country planning (DTCP) on Monday launched a joint demolition drive in Sector 109 and razed over 100 illegal structures across three unauthorised colonies. Over the past few months, several illegal structures have come up in the area, posing security risk to the residents.
District town planner (enforcement) RS Batth, who led the drive, said demolition was carried out at three illegal colonies and more than 100 structures spread over 12 acres of prime land in Sector 109 were razed. “The approach route to these illegal colonies has also been dug up so that these builders do not restart construction in these areas,” he said.
He said that the civic body earlier served notices to the builders of these illegal colonies but they had failed to furnish satisfactory replies.

“Subsequently, restoration notice was issued to these builders but they did not take any action, failing which the demolition drive was carried out. Few illegal structures have not been razed yet as their deadline for responding to the notices is pending,” he said.

The residents living in the sectors, especially along Dwarka Expressway and Golf Course Extension Road, say the encroachments are not just an eyesore but also causing sanitation and security concerns.

“The problem of encroachment is growing in the entire area but the authorities seem to be turning a blind eye to these problems. The lanes and bylanes are encroached upon by street vendors and others due to which residents are facing several problems,” said Saurabh Dubey, a local.

“At our meetings with the authorities, we have a number of times demanded removal of encroachments. Finally some action has been taken. The authorities also must ensure that these errant builders don’t raise illegal colonies on the same land again,” another resident said.
