GURUGRAM: Around 30 shops, which had come up illegally on green belts and government land in Sector 68, were razed by the enforcement wing of the town and country planning department on Wednesday.

The residents of condominiums in Sector 68 had raised the issue of several illegal shops cropping in the area and safety and security concerns. When a team from the department visited the site, they found that the market comprising two blocks were constructed on one-acre land on Tikli-Badshapur road in an illegal manner.
District town planner (enforcement) RS Batth said that around 30 shops were constructed without mandatory approvals and licences from the department. The developer even rented out the shops in complete violation of building norms. After the survey, the department had served show cause notices and directed the owners to restore the place but they failed to take satisfactory action and shops were still operational, he said.

Batth added that the residents opposed the demolition drive as soon as the enforcement team started razing the shops but police team led by sub inspector level official controlled the situation and the illegal shops were razed with the help of two earthmovers.

According to the town and country planning department, for developing any market or commercial space, the developer must procure licence from the department. Following which, the department carries out a survey as per the zoning norms and population density in the area.

Meanwhile, protest by local villagers continued on Sohna Road against the demolition drive conducted in Bhawani Enclave in Bhondsi. Earlier, on Tuesday, around 20 houses and 50 under construction structures were razed on a 12-acre prime land after which around 200 agitated villagers tried to attack enforcement team and went on to block the road demanding withdrawal of demolition squad from the site.
