Gurgaon: The city received heavy rainfall on Thursday, which resulted in several residential societies across new sectors witnessing flooding in basements and compounds. Residents blamed poor quality of construction and the absence of an effective drainage system for the waterlogging and sought action against their respective builders. TOI spoke to residents of at least eight different societies which saw flooding on Thursday. The actual numbers were even more. Most of these societies are along the Dwarka Expressway in the vicinity of the Najafgarh drain or the Badshapur drain. The location, along with poor construction quality and disorganised planning of drains, leads to flooding of basements every year, residents said.

In Sector 37D’s Ramprastha City, rainwater had inundated the entrance. “The Badshapur drain has overflowed and the water has come inside the society. We have complained to the authorities several times, but no action has been taken yet,” said Aatanu Bhattacharya, a resident.

Many other societies — including Mahindra Aura (Sector 109), Spaze Privy (Sector 93), SARE Homes (Sector 93), Godrej Frontier (Sector 80), Antriksh Heights (Sector 84), Orris Carnations (Sector 85), Mapsko Casabella (Sector 82) and M3M Woodshire (Sector 107) — saw their basements or compounds flooded due to the heavy rains on the Wednesday and Thursday.“The basement in our society was heavily flooded as rainwater came inside due to poor construction by the developer. We face the same issue almost every year but there hasn’t been any resolution,” said Manjit Malik, a resident from Spaze Privy, sector 93.

Brisk Lumbini, a society in Sector 109, also witnessed the same problems. “There was a lot of water in the basement due to seepage through tower joints. Basement needs big-ticket repairs, which the builder needs to carry out,” a resident said. At Microtek Greens, an internal road caved in and a car fell in the resulting crater.

Residents now want the government to intervene and ensure that the developers take corrective action so that their lives are not endangered. “We have already filed a complaint with H-Rera, and a case is going on. Meanwhile, the department of townand country planning (DTCP) can help us by making the developer take corrective action,” said Praveen Malik, RWA member of SARE Homes

District town planner RS Batth said all the sites where residents have complained of flooding of basements and related issues are being inspected.

“Based on the deficiencies found, we are directing the party concerned to get the issues resolved at the earliest. We will also recommend structural audit, the cost for which will be borne by the developer or RWA,” said Batth

He added that in case the issues are not resolved, strict action would be recommended and the case would be forwarded to the DTCP director. “Safety of residents is our prime concern and the department won’t hesitate to recommend lodging of FIRs in case the matter isn’t taken seriously,” he said.
