GURUGRAM: Not just the lockdown and the fear of Covid-19, the residents of Raheja Atharva in Sector 109 have one more reason to worry: poor quality of construction and stinking sewage treatment plant, which has turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Around 400 families reside in this society and are in constant fear that the chunks of plaster, that is falling off from the balconies and ceilings might grievously injure someone.

The residents informed that earlier too a few children narrowly escaped when 20-kg concrete chunk fell from a 12th floor balcony. They had immediately approached the DTCP and police but no action has been taken.

Budhram Siwan, another resident, said “Construction quality is pathetic, plaster is falling off, we can see cracks and seepage on the walls, sewage water in basement among other flaws. We have not paid for this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the executive director of Raheja developers, Nayan Raheja, said the project was delivered five years back and has been handed over to the RWA. “The construction was outsourced to Shapoorji Pallonji and we have taken up this issue with them. We are sorry if some issue has arisen and will look into rectifying it at the earliest.”
Anjan Deveshwar, a resident who tried to raise the issue at various levels, said, “Due to the lockdown, we have been asked to stay indoors, but it’s very difficult to stay inside due to the horrible smell. Maintenance agency is simply pumping STP water in the open.”

While the country is fighting coronavirus, the residents are petrified as they may contract dengue or any other water-borne diseases.
Spokespereon of Shapoorji Pallonji said as per the contract with Raheja, we were to undertake civil, structural and finishing works. After the project was handed over by us, other works were done by various third party agencies appointed by Raheja.

The entire structural works for the Project were completed in the year 2011, however the finishing activities got affected on account of RDL’s own delays. Moreover, the quality of the structural/plastering works were duly certified by Raheja. In carrying out other works, Raheja’s sub- contractors had necessarily to break the plastering and brick work and hence any damage caused after handing over in 2015 is not at all attributable to us, said Shapoorji Pallonji spokesperson.
