News: 18km drain soon to avert flooding on NH8, Gurgaon’s key roads-04-11-2025
Gurgaon: Work on a stormwater drainage network in new sectors is set to commence soon. GMDA has allotted the Rs 105 crore project for the construction of a master drain in sectors 76 to 80 and adjoining parts of Manesar.
However, residents and commuters along NH8 may have to wait until mid-2028 for any real relief from waterlogging.
Under the project, the drainage network covering 18.4km will channel rainwater towards existing master drains along the Central and Northern Peripheral Roads, strengthening the city's overall stormwater disposal system. Officials said the project will benefit several residential and commercial sectors along NH8, which have been facing recurrent flooding during the monsoon due to inadequate drainage.
Once completed, the new network will ensure faster discharge of rainwater and prevent stagnation along sector roads and service lanes between Rampura Chowk and Kherki Daula.
The project is part of GMDA's master drainage plan for the Gurgaon-Manesar urban area and was designed keeping in view the natural ground slopes to facilitate gravity-based discharge of stormwater into the existing master drains, the official added.
"The provision of a master stormwater drain along this corridor will greatly improve the city's drainage capacity and reduce instances of urban flooding," said RS Jangra, chief engineer (infra 2), GMDA.
"The work will begin by Nov 8 and is expected to be completed within 30 months. GMDA remains committed to developing well-planned urban infrastructure for the benefit of the public at large," Jangra added. At present, surface drains along NH8, constructed by the NHAI, lack proper disposal systems, resulting in rainwater accumulation on service roads.
