News: Soil caves in at 2 spots, NHAI halts GMDA’s pipeline work along Dwarka Expressway-31-10-2025
Gurgaon: A tussle has broken out between National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and GMDA over a water pipeline being laid along Dwarka Expressway.
The highways authority halted the pipeline work a few days ago, citing safety issues and the absence of mandatory approval.
Soil subsidence was detected at two locations during excavation, prompting NHAI to suspend the work immediately. The 2,000mm diameter pipeline is being laid by GMDA to commission the Sector 72 boosting station, which would further supply water to sectors 58 to 80.
An NHAI official said, "They did not seek formal approval. During excavation, soil subsidence was noticed at two points. If it continued, it could have affected the stability of the expressway."
A senior GMDA official said the pipeline is critical to ensure adequate water supply to the newly developed sectors along SPR and Golf Course Extension Road.
"The work was supposed to be carried out by the NHAI during the construction of Dwarka Expressway. When they refused to undertake the work, it was decided at the higher level of govt that GMDA would complete the remaining portion. We have written to NHAI about this and we initiated the work to avoid delay in completing the water distribution network. After they stopped the work, we submitted a fresh request for approval and hope NHAI clears it soon," the official said. The Rs 8-crore project was awarded in April this year to plug a 350 metre gap in the water supply network near Sector 36A.
During the construction of the expressway, NHAI relocated an earlier water line passing under the Central Peripheral Road (CPR).
However, a 350 metre stretch near Sector 36A remained incomplete due to a land hurdle.
