Gurgaon: The flyover and underpass being constructed at Atul Kataria Chowk are likely to be ready “latest” by December this year, two years after the initial deadline of November 2019 that was set for the project.
This was revealed on Wednesday by officials of the Public Works Department (PWD), to which the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had handed the task of constructing the structures. According to the officials, around 70% of the work on the project has been completed so far.
“We expect the work to be completed latest by December. At present, the only obstruction is a C-type (C-shaped pipe) band of the master stormwater drain of the GMDA that is falling in the alignment of the underpass. It will have to be shifted to the service road. However, there is an underground cable in the service road that will have to be moved for this to happen. Until that is shifted, the stormwater drain cannot be moved and our work on that portion of the underpass is stuck because of this,” said a senior PWD official on request of anonymity.

“The work of shifting the cable is being done through the GMDA. As soon as the cable is moved, the work on moving the stormwater drain will start,” the official said.

Work on the project had started in April 2019, and an initial deadline of November 30 the same year had been set for its completion. This deadline was later revised to October 31, 2020, and further to December 31 this year. A total of Rs 58.35 crore is expected to be spent on the project, which includes a 900-metre-long flyover that will be constructed between the bus stand and Kapashera border, as well as a 700-metre-long underpass, which will come up between Sheetla Mata Mandir and Maharana Pratap Chowk.

Atul Kataria Chowk is a critical junction in the city, connecting major hubs such as the Huda City Centre metro station, Signature Towers, the railway station, Gurugram bus stand, and Sheetla Mata Mandir. The construction of the underpass and flyover, officials hope, will ease the congestion in the area.

“There is an issue on the Delhi road (Old Delhi Gurgaon Road) part as well, where a 100m stormwater drain is pending. We dig there, but then it rains and as a result, water fills up and everything becomes slush. By the time we drain out the water and dry it, it rains again and the whole cycle repeats. That wasted a month for us,” said the PWD official.
