Revamp plan revised, SPR to now have more flyovers, underpasses

Gurgaon: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has revised its proposal for the redevelopment of Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) with an increased cost of Rs 400 crore. The new proposal has also replaced the underpass at the junction of the road and Golf Course Road with a flyover, as it is in a low-lying area and an underpass could face waterlogging in the event of heavy rains.
Talking about the development, a senior GMDA official said they have gone through the entire proposal and revised it. “While we had earlier planned a six-lane underpass at the Golf Course Road-SPR junction, it has been replaced with a flyover,” the official said. Additionally, two flyovers and two underpasses have been proposed on sectors 56/57, 61/61, 50/57 and 62/65 junctions.

The revised proposal was also tabled in the recently-held authority meeting, but it was once again not approved. An elevated flyover has also been proposed at Vatika Chowk. “The redevelopment of Vatika Chowk will be undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India, whereas the cost of the project will be borne by GMDA,” said the official.

He added that the work will be completed in three packages. The first package includes a 1.7km stretch between Gurgaon- Faridabad mor to Ghata village, the second package is from Ghata to Vatika Chowk and the third one is from Vatika Chowk to NH-8. The revised proposal has also suggested redevelopment of junctions between Vatika Chowk and NH-8. There are in all six big junctions on this stretch, including sectors 69/70, 71/72, 70/75, 71/73, 74/74A and 75/75A. “We have also proposed new flyovers at the six junctions in the new DPR,” said the official.

Along with the improvement of the junctions, GMDA will strengthen the entire stretch between Ghata and Vatika Chowk as it receives very heavy traffic.

Asked about the financing of the project, the official said it will be funded from external development charges levied on builders.

The project, which was proposed around two years back, has been hanging till now due to lack of clarity over funds. TOI had earlier reported that the project was tabled at the previous authority meeting of GMDA, however, it was put off due to concerns over the cost.

The road is in need of redevelopment as the carriageway going from Sohna to Faridabad is in poor shape and requires constant patch work.
